College Track

Founded in 1997, College Track is a non-profit organization that exists to help students who have the desire but lack the resources and support to attain higher education and fulfill their own best promise. Through a comprehensive program of academic support and leadership training, College Track helps students successfully complete high school and enter and graduate from college.

Time Commitment: Each College Track volunteer tutor will work with 9th through 12th grade students for at least one 75-minute session per week, Monday-Thursday. Tutoring sessions run from 4:30-5:45pm (first session) and 6:05-7:20pm (second session).

Tutors must commit to the same day/session each week to provide consistency for our students. Tutors must also attend a 1-hour Orientation/Training at the College Track site:

Responsibilities for the volunteer tutor include, but are not limited to:

  • Tutor for a minimum of 1 session per week, the same day each week.
  • Abide by College Track’s “Tutoring Program Expectations.”
  • Attend the bi-annual tutor orientation sessions prior to the start of the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Attend quarterly tutor meetings with the Tutor Coordinator
  • Assist in creating a safe environment for students to learn and study.
  • Refer to the Academic Affairs Director or Tutoring Coordinator with issues related to students’ academic, personal and/or behavioral performance.
  • Monitor assigned students in areas of productivity and attendance. Report concerns to the Academic Affairs Director or Tutoring Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with other tutors to create a productive learning environment at all times.
  • Submit fingerprints and TB test results prior to starting the position.

Volunteer Attributes: Volunteer tutors must demonstrate familiarity with the tutoring process and have experience working with youth. Experience working directly with a diverse population of underprivileged students desired. Additionally, the ideal volunteer has excellent organizational, communication, time managements, and study strategy skills. Math, Science, or English content experience most desired.

Volunteer Training: College Track East Palo Alto will provide a comprehensive training prior to the initial tutoring session.
