Noche de Ciencias 2010

The Silicon Valley Professional Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) cordially invites all students (K-12) and parents to join us for an exciting technology and science awareness night at the 4th annual Noche de Ciencias/Family Science Night. Students will experience various hands-on activities about the different fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Parents will participate in round-tables to learn about college admissions and programs available to finance higher education costs. Come enjoy this educational and fun event for the entire family.

This event is completely free to the public and will be conducted in English and Spanish. Food and refreshments will be provided.

Here is the list of student activities being presented at Noche de Ciencias and instructions on each activity.
1) Will It Sink or Float?Sink_or_Float.doc

4) Brown Bag Catapult
Each group of 2-3 students receives a brown lunch bag containing 3 plastic spoons, 5 rubber bands, 15 craft sticks, 1 paper cup and 5 paper clips. Given a time limit of 40 minutes, teams will design a working catapult that will fling a large marshmallow at a set target. Masking tape is provided.
5) Brown Bag Junk Car
Each Group of 2-3 students receives a brown lunch bag containing – 4 Styrofoam cups (6-8oz), 4 paper clips, 1 flex straw and 1 balloon. They must design a car that will travel at least 1.5 meters across the floor (or a smooth surface) without being pushed or shoved by them. 1 meter of masking tape is provided for each group.
